Are you Violating Facebook’s Rules?

Did you know that you can no longer use Facebook as an entry into a giveaway on your blog?

Go here to read the rules… I’ll wait….

Are you back??

Ok, so tell me, if you can’t use Facebook as an entry into a giveaway any more then why are so many bloggers still doing this? It spells it out in plain English in their rules:

You must not use Facebook features or functionality as a promotion’s registration or entry mechanism.  For example, the act of liking a Page or checking in to a Place cannot automatically register or enter a promotion participant.

I can not tell you how many bloggers violate these rules on a daily basis. And it’s not just the bloggers, it’s the companies too. Every day we get at least 10 emails from companies asking us to run a giveaway with the entry being to “Like” them on Facebook. We refuse and send them a copy of Facebook’s rules and they get upset and move on to another blog. We are ok with that. We like rules. We like to follow the rules.

Are you Violating Facebook’s rules? Do you know someone who is violating Facebook’s rules? Be a friend and share this information with them. We have all worked hard to get our Facebook Friend’s and Fan’s and it would be a shame to loose them all because we violated a rule. Yes, I said loose them all. Your page will be deleted. All of those Friend’s you connected with, all of those Fan’s you worked hard to get, they would all be gone. All because you used Facebook as an entry on a giveaway.

So do the smart thing. Follow the rules.

  1. I believe you can use liking a company as a extra entry into a giveaway but not the MAIN or mandatory entry.

    >>You must not condition registration or entry upon the user taking any action using any Facebook features or functionality other than liking a Page, checking in to a Place, or connecting to your app. For example, you must not condition registration or entry upon the user liking a Wall post, or commenting or uploading a photo on a Wall.<<

I take this to mean you CAN have a reader LIKE a page you cannot force them to comment, like or upload pictures to a wall post.

I send sponsors these rules too and I've been turned down for numerous giveaways! I am not about to break any rules. I see smaller blogs get the HUGE giveaway I was passed on. Oh well.

    Thanks for a great post
